Asset Nurboluly graduated with Bachelor degree in Computers and Software from Kazakh National Technical University named after K.I.Satpaev. Currently he is studying for an M.Sc. in Software Engineering here in the University of St Andrews. His project with SACHI is a Multi-touch window, supervised by Dr Miguel Nacenta.
In recent years multi-touch interfaces as a form of Surface User Interface have became increasingly studied in HCI as a new means of supporting human interaction. Multi-touch interfaces can be used in various areas in people’s lives, such as medicine, education, military, science etc. The main aim of the project is to build a display device which uses multi-touch interface. The device shall provide interaction with objects on the screen and real objects beyond the screen as well. The project consists of two main parts. Firstly, we have to build multi-touch display using frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) technology. FTIR shows a state in particular materials when light is going through one to another material with higher refractive index; where an angle of dip is bigger than a distinct angle. Secondly, we have to integrate built display with one of the existing multi-touch interface software. For the purpose of creating new ways of interaction. For instance, TUIO – A Protocol for Table-Top Tangible User Interfaces, Microsoft Multi-touch in Windows 7. In the end we will have multi-touch transparent display for experimentation.
